In this article we will be going over the nofollow tag that seems to be on a lot of blogs. We will be going over what it is for, and why your links are not showing up in Google, or other engines like Yahoo and Bing when you comment on these blogs. You will also learn how to make you blog dofollow, so other people can get their links seen by the search engine when they comment on your blog. Finally, you will learn is how you can still benefit from blogs that have the no-follow tag.
Nofollow is a tag used mostly to discourage spam comments. I guess “no link from the search engine means no spam” was the thinking when they created this tag, but unfortunately, it also took away the benefit of getting a link, for those that actually contribute to the blog.
If you look at the code on blogs that have this, it shows a “rel = external nofollow” in their code. According to some experts there are at least 2 nofollows one follows the link but does nothing with it and the other one ignores the link entirely. If it has either one you are not getting any link juice from posting there. But don’t worry you will see later how you can still benefit by posting to blogs that have the nofollow tag.
So how can you tell who has the tag, and who does not? There is a plug in for firefox called “searchstatus” you can install, that will highlight where the tag is. You just right click, and check highlight nofollow links, and it will highlight them for you on every page you visit.
If you wish to make your blog a dofollow site, you can do a search for a wordpress plug-in called “Dofollow ” or just type in “Dofollow” and it will show all of the relevant plugins. Choose the best one for you, install it, and activate it. It should take care of everything as is, without any editing or settings. Now, I recommend another plugin called Akismet to filter spam comments. It is free for 1 blog only. You will need to register it to get your key, and then insert the key to configure the plug in. I highly recommend this plugin as it has worked very well blocking spam comments for me.
If you find a relevant blog that has the nofollow tag on it, it can still be useful. You will not get search engine recognition or “link juice” for it, but it is still possible to get traffic from them. A lot of people are looking for blogs to comment on, to build their own back links. Comment, and leave your link. Someone may decide to click on it, which can bring you more traffic. Also If you post on no-follow blogs your post will show up for your firstname and lastname, Which can be useful for personal branding. Thanks for reading and I hope you have learned from it.
